Cutting openings in a raised floor panel  – there is another way!

In an ideal world, floor panels would be delivered to site with factory formed cut outs however, this is rarely practical. Therefore, when floor box or cable grommet openings are required, they must be cut on site. These cut outs are often formed using a drill and jigsaw, and the work is often given to the least experienced site operative. Little attention is given to cutting tolerances. This in turn raises concerns about cut out accuracy and the obvious health and safety implications.

Poorly cut opening mean that the cut out can be either too small or too big. Too small and the floor box or cable grommet are squeezed, distorting their outer frame. This results in lids that cannot close or open as designed. Too large a cut out means that the supporting edge of the floor box or cable grommet is not fully supported. Under load the supporting edge can give way resulting in both the collapse of the floor outlet and whatever was on top of the outlet at the time of the failure.

Gromtec supply a range of carbide tipped hole saws which accurately cut through both steel covered wood core and anhydrite floor panels.  The carbide tipped hole saw is a cost effective and time efficient solution for small to medium sized cut out projects. For projects which require a high number of cut outs ( +500) we would recommend our dedicated specialist cut out service. Using our specialist cutting equipment, developed over years of practical experience, we can accurately and rapidly cut both rectangular and circular floor panel openings.  Our dedicated cutting service is highly efficient, safe and fully insured.
